A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beach: Wars are necessary evils and are best to be avoided. Wars are the source of great destruction and devastation. Culture and civilizations are smashed and swept away in the fit of the furies. These are the curse on the beautiful face of the humanity. Mankind is at the mercy of those who are fond of waging war against the weak and poor nations. The history of the world is full of the horrible incidents of the wars and battles. Nothing can be said in the favor of the unlawful wars which have killed millions of the innocent peoples across the entire world. But when the children are engaged in these wars, they become the worst and heinous.  A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beach is the illustration of the war where children are engaged and are trained to become the fuel of the war.

The child engaged in the wars has the topic of discussion among the journalists, novelists and authors. They have their numbers about the children who have been forced to take part in the war. This is how wars are Fought today: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. In the more than fifty battles going on globally, it is projected that there are some 300,000 child soldiers.But until today, there hasn’t been a first-person accounts from somebody who arrived through this hell and lived.In A Long Way Gone, Beah, currently twenty-five years old, tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled assaulting rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence.

When the writer was 13 years old, the government army selected him for the war. The army was convinced that he is the most suitable boy to fight against the enemy and can perform wonderful acts of bravery.  This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and tragic honesty.

The old man who was present there at the time of the war reported that the people of the village have fled away to the Sierra Leone coat to avoid the deadly attacks of the enemies. Ishmael, Junior, along with their friend decides to travel there in order to find their families. They are accepted into a different village on the grounds that they help with the farming. Caught by surprise, Ishmael, Junior, and their buddy divide and run into the swamps.

It Ishmael roams around the wilderness by himself for some time, until he meets up with a different set of traveling boys whom he recognizes from his home village. The boys then travel together to some other village on the coast. Many refugees fled to this village since the Sierra Leone Armed Forces inhabited it. In search of safety, the group of boys and Ishmael visit that village, but soon depart.

Ishmael Subsequently learns from a woman from his hometown that Junior, his younger brother Ibrahim, and his parents are safe in another village with many others from Mattru Jong.Before they get to the village, the boys meet a guy named Gasemu that Ishmael knew from Mattru Jong.

Gasemu informs them that Ishmael’s household is really safe in the village, and ask the boys to help him take bananas back to that village. However, moments before they get to the town, it is attacked by the RUF. Ismhmael is ready to attack Gasemu because he thinks that he is the guilty and should be punished for his misdeeds but the other boys stop him from doing so. Gasemu is the guilty of not looking and observing that his loved ones are not being visited on the regular basis.

They are then chased into the forest by remaining RUF soldiers, also Gasemu expires from being shot, and leaving Ishmael more saddened.

The book, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beach  is considered one of his best masterpieces. The normal read time of “A Long Way Gone ” is just over six and half hours; nevertheless, if you’ve got the hardcover book as I do, then it was easily read in about five and a half an hour.
